Zaria is a beautiful home to several bustling markets that serve as focal points for economic activities and social interactions. These markets do not just serve the needs of residents but also attract traders and buyers from outside the region. There are 6 major markets in Zaria; From the bubbling atmosphere of the sabon gari market, to the bustling buzz of samaru markets, down to the culturally endowed Kofan Doka markets to the settling local serene of the Makarfi markets each market possessing its unique direction.

Most of the major markets in Zaria are located in different parts of Zaria with each being a force and dominating its region. These markets include

1. Sabon-Gari Market Zaria

Sabon Gari market is one of the popular market in Zaria located in Sabon Gari area just after the well-known Pz area of Zaria. It’s a well-known market as almost every resident is Familiar with this market. Foodstuffs, electronics, provisions, fabrics, shoes and everyday essentials are readily available at affordable prices. The Market is always open all week round. Nearby is Kasuwan Ayaba where a wide variety of fruits including oranges, bananas, plantains are sold at lower prices making it a favorite destination for fruit lovers.

2. Giwa Market

 Popularly known as Kasuwan Hatsi (grains market) is another bustling hub located in Giwa town. Primarily focused on grains the Market usually comes alive every Thursday and Sunday attracting traders and buyers from far and near. Local farmers usually bring their grains to this market and sell at a very affordable price both in large and small quantities. While grains are the primary products sold at the market it is not just limited to grains but welcoming to every other product appealing to its residents. Giwa market is said to be the biggest Maize market in Zaria, every breed and quantity of maize is being sold in this market.

3. Samaru Market

 Samaru Market is an everyday go to place for residents of samaru Zaria. Just like every market it opens everyday but the market experience a high influx of traders and buyers every Friday as that is the designated market day. Fridays make samaru market very attractive as there is a display of many items ranging from, clothing, shoes, kitchenware, accessories and  foodstuffs etc. making samaru a must- visit for everyone. The market records an average of over 50 traders while more than 200 customers visit the market to make purchases on a weekly basis.

4. Makarfi Market

Kasuwan Makarfi stands as one of Zaria’s biggest and renowned  grains market.The Vibrant and  bubbling atmosphere attracts traders and buyers from the four corners of Nigeria making it a hub for locally produced grains. One of the uniqueness of this market is the beauty it displays by showcasing agricultural products promoting the richness of zaria’s farmers and soil. The Market is usually busy every weddnesday as traders gather to display their finest farm produce ranging from groundnut, rice, millet, sorghum to every grain produced in Northern Nigeria . The market boosts and strengthens the local economy enforcing the importance and richness of the Northern soil. Kasuwan Makarfi is more than just a market it’s a great display of the richness of Zaria’s agricultural soil.

5. Kasuwan Amaru

Another beautiful market existing in the city of zaria is Kasuwan Amaru, another amazing market in Zaria city. Meeting the daily needs of every Zaria city resident. Monday’s make Zaria city bubbling and busy as that is the market day for that particular market with alot of items being displayed and an influx of both buyers and traders.

6. Goat/Ram Market

Established in the late 1980s and early 1981, tucked away in the Dogarawa area of Zaria, the goat market stands as Zaria’s most unique and biggest goat/ram market known for the sole purpose of the sale and slaughter of rams and goats making meat prices of goats and ram incredibly affordable.About 70-80 goats and ram are being slaughtered in this market on a daily basis with more being slaughtered during the festive season. With the owners of restaurants and hotels being the biggest customers of this markets.The first goat market in zaria is located at Muchia Zaria which is still functioning till date before moving to MTD Zaria and finally relocating to Dogarawa which till date maintains it’s title as the biggest goat/ram market in zaria.What makes the market stand out is its accessibility to people from all walks of life with every quantity of meat being made available to allThis market satisfies the goat and ram meat cravings of zaria residents while also supporting local traders and butchers.
